New Bull Riding Gloves - Heritage Performance Riding Gloves

We have added a new line of bull riding gloves from Heritage Performance Riding Gloves. The initial response from guys that we have had test them in the field has been extremely positive. All of the bull riders, ranging from high school rodeo to pro riders in the PRCA and PBR, have all loved the feel, fit and style of this new bullriding glove.

Heritagebullridinggloves

The bull riding glove offers a unique built in wrap system to provide addition support and help reduce wrist injuries. It also offers a built in palm piece to increase the life of the glove. We do not have this bull riding glove included in our latest edition of our Bull Riding Equipment Catalog, however these can now be purchased via our web-store or in our Mobile Unit attending events.

---------------------------------------------------------------

PRO 8.0 Bull Riding Glove

Features:
• A custom form fit with our durable all leather construction. This glove is designed specifically for the bull rider to maximize protection and fit.

• Made of genuine Goatskin leather. This supple material is three times stronger than cowhide or deerskin. We use only the best materials available.

• Our exclusive 6mm Memory Foam padding provides superior protection to the back of the hand. Memory Foam forms to the shape of your hand while on and returns to it’s original shape when off.

• There is a double layer of leather across the back of the hand and forefingers for increased wear protection.

• The palm side of the glove is also reinforced with a double layer of leather in the rope channel area and a stitching pattern sewn in to increase grip.

• The thumb is constructed of a durable stretch nylon Spandura® to allow full mobility. The thumb tip is also reinforced on both sides with leather.

• A long 80mm neoprene cuff adds additional padding while the wrist strap is securely attached.

• The 70mm wide leather strap anchors the glove to your hand with a large Velcro® panel, eliminating the need to tape the glove.

Specify Right hand or Left hand.

Bull rope braiding description

9 PLAIT:
This is the most popular plait with the professionals. It is the hardest, tightest and most uniform of all bullrope plaits. When braided correctly it takes the most time to braid, since we don't take any shortcuts it does cost a little more. Most professionals will tell you that it is well worth the extra expense. About 3/4" wide, and doesn't stretch down much.

7 PLAIT:
Becoming more popular than ever, it is about as wide as a 9 plait but is softer and more spongy in your hand.

5 PLAIT:
This is a popular plait with the up and coming competitors. Similar in width, but more course that the 7 plait yet it is also very mushy. It is the fastest plait to braid and the least expensive.

Mushy 5 PLAIT:
This is the widest, loosest braid. When pulled tight reduces in size. Mushy plait can be as wide as 2" when loose and can be pulled down to a similar size as a traditional 5 plait.

Baby 9 PLAIT:
Recommended for smaller hands. Braided hard and tight like the regular 9 plait yet with fewer strands in each plait making it measure 9/16" wide.

Bull Riding Helmet Survey - To Wear or Not to Wear?

Several months ago we published a survey on how many people were wearing bullriding helmets. To most they might find the results surprising, however I for one am not.

As of this posting over 53% (Red Balloons below) indicating they are wearing a helmet, while only 37% were not (Green) and the remaining 9.7% (blue) were considering changing to a helmet.

Helmetsurvey_2

A couple things stand out.

For starters...there are a ton of bull riders spread out across the US. A few from Mexico and even a couple from Canada that joined in. That is extremely exciting to see the overall number.

The younger generation of bull riders do not face the same stigma that previous generations faced. It is no longer just a Tuff guy sport. It truly does provide life changing opportunities ~ some good and some terrible. However with the millions of dollars at stake, more and more cowboys are choosing to wear a bull riding helmet.

Take the survey...

We offer several helmets that can be used in the sport of bull riding. Keep in mind, regardless how much we try to make safety equipment that will totally prevent injuries and death, it simply is not possible to prevent all. Wearing a helmet can not guarantee that you will not get injured or die. However it can reduce the severiety of certain injuries and in some cases prevent a fatality.

1) Ambulance Ride = $5K - $7K
1) Life Flight = $12K - $50K
Surgery - ? - $1MM

I know several guys now facing medical bills exceeding $150,000 and that was with insurance that covered their injuries.

The price of a helmet seems pretty darn cheap. Too many guys decide to start wearing them after they themselves or a close friend is seriously injured. Do yourself, your family and your friends a favor and at least explore if a helmet is right for you. The sooner you start wearing one....the more money you will win and the longer your career just might be.

Bull Riding

Bull riding is a rodeo sport that involves a rider getting on a large bull and attempting to stay mounted for at least 8 seconds while the animal attempts to buck off the rider. The rider tightly fastens one hand to the bull with a long braided rope. It is perhaps the most famed and dangerous of all the rodeo sports.

Information on how to correctly measure for custom rodeo chaps

All Youth & Adult Rodeo Chaps require three primary measurements;

Chap_guide

1) WAIST - Measure around the portion of the waist that you desire for your new chaps to ride. Some like them a bit lower, some higher. A general rule of thumb is around the base of the the belt loops. All chaps will have adjustable back belts and front strap adjustment to allow for changes.

2) UPPER THIGH - Measure around the largest portion of your upper thigh. All chaps do come standard with three adjustable leg straps for further adjustment.

3) OUTSEAM - By far the most important and most common mistake made. Do not guess. Do not provide blue jean measurements. We require you to provide us with the true outseam measurement as shown above. Even if you are giving the chaps as a gift, it is better to be safe than sorry. Use a cloth tape measure and go from the top of the waist down the OUTSIDE of the leg to the floor with boots on. The measurement you provide for the outseam will include fringe.

*Certain Kids & Youth Chaps are only available in set outseams as indicated in each product listing. Be sure to reference the above image to be sure they will fit correctly.

Understanding a Super Pro Bull Rope Construction

Tom Scrivner, Reata Bull Ropes,

El Paso

,

Texas

Bullrope

A.

Loop

Polypropylene, three twist, 5/8” diameter rope, 7’ long.

B.     Keeper

Braided nylon parachute cord.  The purpose is to keep the loop rope tight together.  Normally there are three sliding keepers on a Super Pro rope.  Also, the loop can be stitched together rather than using slide keepers.

C.     Rosebud Knot

A special knot tied at the ends of the twisted rope (loop).  It separates and holds the twisted rope from the braided rope.

D.     Block

The three twist rope is separated into 14 strands of 6 strings (5/8” rope has 42 strands.  When looped, the two ends provide 42 strands each or 84 strands total).  The block is braided in a 6 plait.

Burgundy

alum tan leather is laced over the block and burgundy alum tan leather is wrapped around the side of the block.  This leather provides the structural support for the handhold.

E.     Riser

The riser is constructed by wrapping leather from the block around the base of the handhold.  This leather tethers the front of the handhold upwards so there is room for the hand to be inserted without extreme pressure on the hand.  Risers are normally referred to in terms of: 2 finger riser (about 1 ½” at the highest point in the handhold); 3 finger riser which is the normal distance (about 2” at the highest point in the handhold); and the 4 finger riser (about 3” at the highest point in the handhold).

F.      Base

The base is the bottom support under the actual handhold.  It is braided in a 9 plait, using a part of the 84 strands coming out of the block.  The base is 11” to 12” long.  The handhold leather lace is back laced at the bottom of the back to add stability and support for the handhold.  The base touches the bull’s back bone.

G.    Handhold

The handhold is braided in a 9 plait.  Dura cord (.95 weed eater) is braided into both sides of the 12” handhold

1.  There are three basic widths in the handhold:

a. ¾” handhold (for small hands) = 9 plait with 18 strands (9 strings of 2 strands for a total of 18)

b.  7/8” handhold (the standard size for most bull ropes and for typical size hands) = 9 plait with 27 strands (9 strings of 3 strands = 27)

c. 1” handhold (for large hands) = 9 plait with 32 strands (9 strings and a combination of 3 and 4 strands = 32)

2.  Types of handholds:

a. Full lace

b. Skip lace

c. ½ full & ½ skip lace

d. ½ lace

          3.  Right hand or left hand

H.     Bulk

All of the remaining strands come together from the handhold and the base to form the remainder of the rope.  The next section is only 3” to 4” long and for the lack of a better term; it is called the bulk because all of the strands from the handhold and the base are rejoined.  At this point, it is important to note that strands can be added or reduced from the rope depending on the specifications of the rope.  The bulk is a 9 plait.

I.         Ware Strip

Nylon parachute cord is braided into the rope to provide a protection from major ware on the rope from the loop.  This is a 9 plait and is approximately 22” long.

J.      Tail

The tail of the rope is as specific to the cowboy as the cloth is to a shirt.

1.      Feel

a.     Tight

b.     Soft

c.     Extra Soft (Mushy)

2.      Plait

a.     Baby 9 tail (9X9, 18/18) = 9 strings of 2 strands (9X2=18). This is a tight tail.

b.     Tight 9 tail (9X9, 27/27) = 9 strings of 3 strands (9X3=27).  This is a tight tail.

c.     Seven tail (9X7, 28/28) = 7 strings of 4 strands (7X4=28).  This can be tight, soft or extra soft tail.

d.     Wide 5 (9X5, 27/30) = 5 strings of 6 strands (5X6=30). This can be tight, soft or extra soft tail.

e.     Super Wide 5 (9X5, 27/35) = 5 strings of 7 strands (5X7=35).  This can be tight, soft or extra soft tail.

Bull Riding Protective Vest - Phoenix Performance

The nature of our business involves hearing terrible stories from people who have been injured competing in the sport of rodeo. However, this time we were blessed to receive notice that our recommendations may have prevented serious injury or worse. There is no better testimonial than those coming from the customers using the products.
Nathan, I just wanted to thank you for suggesting the Phoenix vest. On October 17, Eric was on a pratice bull. He made his ride, but some how ended up flat of his back underneath the bull. A big bull. He had to be close to 2000 lbs. He took a hoof directly to his lower chest. A full shot. After several hours of x-rays and a catscan I am excited to relay to you that he only had bruising. Very painful bruising, but only bruising. There could not be a better testament for a piece of safety equipment.
Without a good vest he could not have escaped serious injury or worse.

I cannot express to you and Phoenix how greatful we are.

Again, Thank You
God Bless You
Matt and Pam Searcey
Unfortunately, there are no products that can prevent all injuries. We do work with the manufacturers to continue to improve and advance the protection, however competing in the sport of rodeo is dangerous. We strongly encourage our customers to invest in the best equipment.

Gator Wheel & Paddle Wheel Rowels

As many of you are aware (and have been patiently waiting) the gator wheel and paddle wheel rowels have been backordered for several months.

We confirmed today with Sam that we will receive our delivery within the next three weeks. They are working as quickly as possible to get these produced and were forced to replace a major piece of equipment required to make this style of rowel.

We will receive enough to cover everyone who is currently on backorder and will have enough stock to keep us rolling for a while!

As we receive additional information we will pass it along.

Thanks for your patience. Sam & I greatly appreciate it!!!

Adam Steen - Video Learning to Ride Bulls

For those of you that might not be able to make it tonight, I thought I'd share some of the video from Adam getting on his first couple times.

What has made this so fun is Adam is a confident public speaker and he teaches me....and when it comes to riding bulls the game gets reversed in a hurry.

For those of you with Feedreaders follow me to the video....

Making Progress - Final Count Down

Well...for those who might be curious how Adam did last night, I am pleased to report he did outstanding for his first attempt.

Adam got on a total of three and made progress with each attempt. He is absolutely stoked for Friday night in Webster City. Looks like we will have quite a few Des Moines folks making the journey to show support or say their last "Good Byes".

If you happen to be in the area, feel free to come join in the fun in Webster City at the Fairgrounds.

I think I may have scared him when I told him today that the bull he is getting on will make what he got on last night look like goats.
